The
Utah state fossil is Allosaurus (meaning different
lizard), a theropod dinosaur. At over 50 feet long and weighing
in at some 28,000 pounds, Allosaurus was a fearsome and
ferocious
predator of the late
Jurassic, some 200 to 150
million
years ago. Beyond dinosaurs, Utah is
considered by some the most fossiliferous state within
the United States. The
Cambrian strata also yield a faunal fossil assemblage paralleling
that of Canada's Burgess
Shale, earning Utah the honor of a
fossil Lagerstatte.
